INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF PLANET EARTH
Geoscientists Support the eGY - Find out why you should be interested: it will affect your future.
"An Electronic Geophysical Year (eGY) is planned for 2007-2008 as a 50-year sequel to the highly successful International Geophysical Year. The central objective is to bring the management of geoscientific information worldwide into the 21st century through an e-Science approach and the development of virtual observatories. The challenge in 1957-58 was to acquire and make available to the world community the observational data required to build a comprehensive understanding of the Earth and its processes. That challenge remains and is yet more pressing because of the growing demands we place on our natural resources and environment."
Ralph Baird and Baird Petrophysical International have announced that they are supporting the US and international efforts for a successful eGY Electronic Geophysical Year 2007. To facilitate this commitment, BPI and Ralph Baird have contributed time, materials, company labor and business and investment earnings to eGY 2007. Below is a link to the eGY Newsletters which you can download here or from the eGY.org website.

Youth to Participate in eGY Virtual and Real-time Observatories: Bringing Youth Together from Different Cultures
An important aspect to eGY is to set in motion the principles and goals of the celebration. One benefit is the education and encouragement of youth into science and technology through eGY projects and coordination with elementary and secondary schools. Encourage your children and grandchildren into a career in science and engineering. Show them why you became involved. Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity to influence the next generation of our youth. One idea is to sponsor Science Ambassadors to eGY events.
Field Data is Valuable: Protect Geophysical Data Using the World Data Center concept
An important part of eGY is the collection and protection of scientific data. We have witnessed destruction and erosion of geophysical data by its owners and data collectors. This abuse of data must be stopped. It is a waste of precious information. To discuss this aspect please contact the undersigned. If you own geophysical data and no longer can protect it then let the undersigned know your interests to preserve the data. Discover the history and future of the World Data Centers and how they can provide data preservation and access.

The following list will expand during the year. Recommendations and efforts are underway for the following energy related professional societies to support the eGY:
SEG Society of Exploration Geophysicists
SEG Foundation
SIPES Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists (National Organization)
The SEG Executive Committee passed the following resolution:
"SEG noting the approach of the 50-year anniversary in 2007 of the International Geophysical Year (IGY), which was outstandingly successful in advancing our knowledge of the Earth and geospace through the provision of comprehensive geoscientific observational data,
NOTING the vast increase in observational data since the IGY, much of them available in near real-time, and the limitations on progress posed by the ever-growing problems of data storage, maintenance, and access,
NOTING the unprecedented potential of modern information management methodologies, based on the internet, to overcome these limitations through sharing of information, software, and hardware, and
SUPPORTS the adoption of 2007 as the Electronic Geophysical Year (eGY) - to be used as a focus for providing ready access to geoscientific data and processing capability using the electronic means now at our disposal."
If you have any personal experiences about the 1957-58 IGY please send these to the undersigned to publish here. BPI in parallel with the eGY will plan to add many personal experiences of geologists and geophysicists whose lives and careers were significantly affected of the last IGY. Help us share this information. Send us your comments and stories. You can qualify for a certificate and a gold pin by applying to the IGY Gold Program. Just submit your personal experience or an item of interest and you will belong to a group who supported or participated in the IGY. The IGY Gold Program pin. Join now.
